What is Aufbau principle?
- The word “Aufbau” comes from German, meaning “construction” or “building up”.
- Just as a house is built step by step from the ground up, atoms also “build up” their electron configurations by filling electrons into orbitals starting from the lowest energy level.
- This stepwise process ensures that atoms remain as stable as possible by minimizing their energy.
